Size, strength and function answer different questions
A larger muscle measurement on MRI is not itself a strength test or a measure of everyday function. Physical activity also trains skills, balance and cardiovascular fitness. Device treatment can be considered within an individual plan without assigning it an unsupported number of gym workouts.
Muscle size, strength and everyday function: what do the measurements mean? · EMSCULPT NEO functional wellness: what is it and what has been studied?
No. EMSCULPT NEO can create significant localised muscle stimulation, but it cannot replace everything exercise does for your body.
It is better understood as a highly efficient adjunct to training.
Clinical research has demonstrated substantial increases in measured muscle thickness following EMSCULPT NEO. In one sham-controlled abdominal study, rectus abdominis muscle thickness increased by an average of 24.2% at three months.
A separate MRI study of the lateral abdomen reported increases of approximately 27% in muscle thickness and 29% in muscle cross-sectional area three months after treatment.
Those are significant local muscular changes.
They still do not make EMSCULPT NEO equivalent to exercise as a whole.
What about the claim that four sessions equal 12 to 16 weeks in the gym?
You may see EMSCULPT NEO described as producing muscular changes comparable with approximately 12 to 16 weeks of resistance training.
There is a reasonable physiological basis for saying that EMSCULPT NEO can produce muscle growth over a much shorter treatment schedule than traditional training commonly requires.
However, there has not been a high-quality clinical trial directly randomising people to four EMSCULPT NEO sessions versus exactly 16 weeks of resistance training three times per week and demonstrating that every outcome is equivalent.
So at ¹EM, we would not turn that useful comparison into a literal promise.
The accurate takeaway is:
EMSCULPT NEO can produce meaningful localised muscle growth within a short treatment program, but it is not a substitute for the full health and performance benefits of resistance training.
What does EMSCULPT NEO do that a normal workout cannot easily do?
The electromagnetic component produces repeated involuntary muscular contractions at intensities beyond what you would normally voluntarily sustain through thousands of repetitions.
¹EM's EMSCULPT NEO information describes approximately 20,000 contractions during a 30-minute treatment.
That creates an extremely concentrated stimulus to a particular muscle group.
It can therefore be particularly interesting when the objective is targeted treatment of areas such as:
abdomen and core
glutes
thighs
arms
calves
What does the gym do that EMSCULPT NEO cannot?
A lot.
Exercise provides benefits extending far beyond increasing the thickness of one treated muscle.
Resistance and aerobic exercise contribute to:
cardiovascular fitness
bone health
metabolic health
coordination
balance
tendon adaptation
joint loading
movement skills
whole-body strength
endurance
mental health
long-term functional independence
EMSCULPT NEO does not replace those benefits.
So why use EMSCULPT NEO if I already train?
This can actually be one of the better use cases.
For someone who already trains, EMSCULPT NEO can provide a concentrated stimulus to an area that:
is responding slowly
is difficult to activate
needs additional conditioning
is a particular aesthetic priority
could benefit from increased localised muscle development
The objective becomes training plus technology, not technology instead of training.
What if I don't currently exercise?
That does not automatically mean you cannot have treatment.
However, your long-term outcome is likely to be better if treatment becomes part of a broader strategy that eventually includes appropriate physical activity.
If inactivity is due to pain, injury, illness or another limitation, that should be discussed during consultation.
Can EMSCULPT NEO make me stronger?
EMSCULPT NEO clearly stimulates muscle and published imaging studies have demonstrated muscle hypertrophy.
Whether that translates into a particular improvement in functional strength depends on the muscle, treatment protocol, baseline and how strength is measured.
It should therefore not be marketed as though completing four sessions automatically adds a predetermined amount to your squat, deadlift or sporting performance.
Frequently asked questions
Is one EMSCULPT NEO treatment the same as doing 20,000 crunches?
The device can generate a very large number of involuntary abdominal contractions, but it is not physiologically identical to performing thousands of voluntary crunches.
Is four sessions really equivalent to 16 weeks in the gym?
It is better treated as a comparison of local muscle-building efficiency, not literal equivalence between the two programs.
Should I keep exercising during EMSCULPT NEO?
For most suitable patients, maintaining an appropriate training routine is encouraged. Your individual program can be discussed during consultation.
What produces the best result?
For many patients, the strongest strategy is not choosing between EMSCULPT NEO and exercise.
It is combining targeted treatment with sustainable training, nutrition and appropriate recovery.
¹EM's view
We do not want EMSCULPT NEO to replace your gym membership.
We want it to make your effort more productive where the technology is appropriate.
