Some of the changes produced by EMSCULPT NEO can be long-lasting, but it would be misleading to promise that your visible result is permanently fixed.
What durability studies can show
A result measured at a particular follow-up tells us what was observed at that time. Muscle conditioning, remaining fat tissue and appearance can change with health, activity and time. Maintenance decisions are individual; a study follow-up is not an automatic maintenance prescription.
Muscle size, strength and everyday function: what do the measurements mean? · How many EMSCULPT NEO sessions will I need?
EMSCULPT NEO changes muscle and localised fat in the treatment area. Muscle, however, remains biologically responsive to how you use it. If you stop exercising completely, lose muscle through inactivity, gain significant weight or your body composition changes with time, your appearance can change too.
The encouraging part is that clinical studies have demonstrated that measurable changes can persist well beyond the final treatment.
In a randomised sham-controlled EMSCULPT NEO abdominal study, reductions in subcutaneous fat thickness and increases in rectus abdominis muscle thickness were still present at the six-month follow-up.
Earlier research using HIFEM technology alone followed 21 patients for approximately one year. Compared with baseline, investigators still found significant changes in abdominal muscle thickness and fat measurements at the one-year assessment. That study was small and involved the earlier HIFEM technology rather than the combined RF plus HIFEM EMSCULPT NEO platform, so it supports durability rather than proving permanent results.
What happens to the muscle result?
Think about EMSCULPT NEO muscle development in the same way you would think about muscle gained through exercise.
If you build muscle in the gym and then remain active, you have a much better chance of maintaining it.
If you stop providing the muscle with meaningful stimulus indefinitely, some of that adaptation can decline.
EMSCULPT NEO is no different in that respect.
This is why ¹EM does not present a treatment course as:
Four sessions and you never need to think about your muscles again.
The better objective is to use treatment to create a meaningful change, then support that change with normal movement, resistance exercise and maintenance treatment where clinically appropriate.
What about the fat reduction?
Published EMSCULPT NEO studies have demonstrated reductions in measured subcutaneous fat thickness following treatment.
In the sham-controlled abdominal trial, the active group showed an average 20.5% reduction in measured subcutaneous fat thickness at one month and 28.3% at three months. The improvement remained present at six months, although some decline was observed.
That does not mean your body becomes permanently incapable of storing fat in the area.
Future weight gain can change the size of remaining fat cells and the overall contour of the body.
Can my result disappear if I gain weight?
Potentially, yes.
Body contour is affected by:
overall body weight
subcutaneous fat
visceral fat
muscle mass
physical activity
diet
ageing
hormones
pregnancy
illness and periods of inactivity
The device cannot freeze your body composition in time.
That is why maintaining approximately stable body weight and remaining physically active usually gives you the best chance of preserving the visible result.
Does ¹EM offer maintenance treatment?
For selected patients, yes.
Some patients may benefit from occasional maintenance treatment after completing their initial program.
That does not mean everyone needs indefinite treatment.
The decision should depend on:
your original goal
your baseline
how well you responded
your activity level
whether your measurements are changing
whether further treatment is likely to add meaningful value
At ¹EM, this is another reason we use objective progress tracking rather than automatically scheduling maintenance because a calendar says it is due.
How does ¹EM track whether my results are lasting?
Where appropriate, ¹EM uses ShapeScale 3D body scanning to create a baseline and compare external body measurements and shape through the treatment journey.
Rather than relying solely on photographs or asking whether you "feel different", progress can be reviewed against previous measurements.
¹EM's current treatment model specifically incorporates 3D scanning and interval progression tracking.
ShapeScale is a progress-tracking tool. It is not a diagnostic test and does not replace clinical assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Will my muscles stay bigger forever?
Not necessarily. Muscle remains responsive to training, activity, ageing and nutrition. Maintaining an active lifestyle can help preserve muscular adaptations.
Does the fat immediately come back when treatment stops?
No. Clinical studies have shown measurable fat changes persisting for months after treatment. However, later weight gain can alter body contour.
How long have EMSCULPT NEO results been demonstrated?
The strongest sham-controlled EMSCULPT NEO abdominal study followed patients for six months. Earlier HIFEM research has demonstrated persistent changes at approximately one year, but longer-term high-quality EMSCULPT NEO data remain limited.
Will I need maintenance sessions?
Possibly, but not automatically. Your response, goals and ongoing measurements should guide that decision.
The ¹EM approach
Our goal is not simply to produce a result at the end of the treatment course.
It is to produce a result that makes sense for your body, document it and help you understand how to maintain it.
