The pelvic floor contributes to sexual function, and HIFEM research has explored whether stimulation can improve women's reported sexual experience. The early findings are encouraging, but sexual symptoms often have several contributors.
What did the early study report?
Hlavinka and colleagues retrospectively assessed 30 women using the Female Sexual Function Index, a questionnaire covering several aspects of sexual function. The study reported improvement in the total score after a HIFEM course, with follow-up to three months. It had no untreated or sham comparison group.
The percentage improvement describes a questionnaire score. It should not be read as the percentage of women who were cured or as proof that everyone experienced the same change.
Why might the pelvic floor matter?
Pelvic-floor function is one part of sexual health. Muscle activation and coordination can be relevant, but desire, arousal, comfort and satisfaction also involve hormonal, vascular, neurological, psychological and relationship factors. A muscle treatment does not address every possible cause.
What if intimacy is painful?
Pain deserves its own assessment. It should not automatically be attributed to weakness or treated with more strengthening. Difficulty relaxing, tissue changes, infection and other conditions may require a different approach.
What can I discuss at a consultation?
Describe the concern in your own words. Relevant details can include bladder symptoms, childbirth or surgery, menopause-related changes, discomfort, medications and what you would like to improve. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis.
EMSELLA may be discussed when pelvic-floor stimulation is a suitable part of the plan. The conversation can also include pelvic-floor physiotherapy or other care.
