There is generally no required downtime after EMSELLA. Most patients can return to their normal day immediately after treatment.
Know what to report
Returning to usual activities does not mean ignoring unexpected symptoms. Contact the treating team about pain or other unexpected effects and follow any individual advice provided during assessment.
That can include:
returning to work
driving
running errands
social plans
walking
normal household activities
exercising if you feel comfortable doing so
EMSELLA is non-invasive.
There are no incisions, injections, internal treatment probes or anaesthetic, so there is no surgical recovery period afterwards.
BTL Australia states that patients can resume daily activities immediately after EMSELLA® treatment. [1]
A published clinical study involving 75 women treated with HIFEM pelvic floor stimulation also reported no pain, downtime or adverse events during the study. [2]
Can I go straight back to work after EMSELLA?
Yes.
Most patients can return directly to work after their appointment.
A typical EMSELLA treatment takes approximately 28 to 30 minutes, making it relatively easy to fit around a normal day.
You do not usually need to:
take the day off work
arrange someone to drive you home
recover from anaesthetic
change dressings
avoid sitting
remain at the clinic afterwards
For many patients, this is one of the main practical advantages of EMSELLA® compared with more invasive pelvic health treatments.
Can I drive after EMSELLA?
Yes.
EMSELLA® does not involve sedation or anaesthetic, so treatment itself does not generally prevent you from driving afterwards.
Unless another unrelated medical issue affects your ability to drive, you can usually leave your appointment and continue with your day.
Can I exercise after EMSELLA?
Generally, yes.
There is no standard requirement to avoid normal physical activity after EMSELLA treatment.
You can usually return to:
walking
gym training
running
Pilates
normal exercise
everyday physical activity
according to how you feel.
Because EMSELLA intentionally produces repeated pelvic floor muscle contractions, some people may notice temporary muscular awareness or fatigue afterwards.
If your pelvic floor feels unusually fatigued or uncomfortable, there is no benefit in forcing an intense workout simply because exercise is technically permitted.
Listen to your body and contact the ¹EM team if you experience anything unexpected.
Will my pelvic floor feel sore afterwards?
It is possible to experience some temporary muscular awareness, fatigue or soreness because the treatment deliberately stimulates repeated pelvic floor contractions.
Many patients experience very little afterwards.
In the published 75-patient HIFEM urinary incontinence study, participants reported no pain or downtime. [2]
A 2025 EMSELLA study involving 27 men with urinary incontinence following prostate surgery likewise reported no adverse events during the study. [3]
Individual experiences can still differ.
The important distinction is that temporary muscle sensations do not usually require a recovery period.
What does EMSELLA feel like during treatment?
You remain fully clothed and seated on the EMSELLA® chair.
As treatment begins, you feel the pelvic floor muscles being activated.
Patients commonly describe:
tingling
tapping
tightening
repeated deep muscular contractions
The sensation can become quite strong as treatment intensity increases.
It should feel like powerful muscle activation rather than something you simply have to endure.
If you experience unexpected pain or discomfort, tell the clinical team.
Do I need to rest after EMSELLA?
Usually not.
There is no standard requirement for bed rest or restricted activity after treatment.
You can generally leave the clinic immediately and return to your normal routine.
If you personally feel tired or notice muscular fatigue, you can of course modify your activity, just as you might following another form of muscle training.
Do I need to take time off work?
For most patients, no.
EMSELLA is particularly convenient for people who want pelvic floor treatment without disrupting work or daily commitments.
Appointments can generally be planned around:
work
family responsibilities
exercise
errands
social plans
A standard treatment takes approximately 30 minutes.
Do I need someone to come with me?
Usually not.
There is no sedation or anaesthetic, so most patients attend their appointment independently and leave independently afterwards.
If you have another medical reason that means you normally require assistance, that is separate from EMSELLA® itself.
Can I have EMSELLA during my lunch break?
For many patients, yes.
Because treatment itself lasts around 30 minutes and does not generally require recovery afterwards, EMSELLA® can often be scheduled within a normal working day.
Allow a little additional time for arrival, treatment preparation and any clinical review that may be required.
Your first appointment may take longer because consultation and treatment suitability need to be established before treatment begins.
Do I have to change clothes?
No.
EMSELLA treatment is performed while you remain fully clothed.
You sit on the treatment chair for the duration of the session.
There is no internal treatment applicator.
This also means there is generally no post-treatment dressing, changing or recovery process before you leave.
Is anything inserted internally?
No.
EMSELLA stimulates the pelvic floor using an electromagnetic field generated by the treatment chair.
There is no internal probe or applicator used during treatment.
For patients who feel hesitant about pelvic floor treatment because they expect an invasive procedure, this can make EMSELLA considerably more approachable.
Can I shower after EMSELLA?
Yes.
There are no surgical wounds, puncture sites or dressings to keep dry.
Normal bathing and showering can generally continue as usual.
Can I have sex after EMSELLA?
There is no standard EMSELLA® recovery period that requires patients to abstain from sexual activity after routine treatment.
If you feel comfortable and have not been advised otherwise for another medical reason, normal activity can generally continue.
This is different from situations where someone is recovering from:
childbirth
pelvic surgery
prostate surgery
another pelvic procedure
In those circumstances, restrictions associated with the underlying medical recovery still apply regardless of EMSELLA.
Dr Emir will consider this when determining whether you are ready to commence treatment.
What if I am having EMSELLA after childbirth?
Postpartum patients need to distinguish between EMSELLA® downtime and postpartum recovery.
EMSELLA itself does not usually require downtime.
However, your body may still be recovering from pregnancy and childbirth.
At ¹EM, EMSELLA is not performed during pregnancy or within the first three months postpartum.
After that point, Dr Emir considers factors including:
vaginal or Caesarean delivery
wound healing
tearing or episiotomy
postpartum complications
pelvic symptoms
urinary symptoms
overall recovery
Once you have been assessed as suitable for EMSELLA, the treatment itself generally does not add a separate recovery period.

What if I am having EMSELLA after prostate surgery?
The same principle applies.
EMSELLA itself is non-invasive and generally does not require downtime.
However, prostate surgery has its own recovery process.
The fact that EMSELLA® requires no downtime does not mean it should be started before surgical healing is adequate.
Dr Emir will consider your procedure, recovery, urinary symptoms and relevant medical history before treatment is commenced.

Will I feel different immediately afterwards?
Some patients may notice increased awareness of their pelvic floor muscles or changes in muscle activation.
Others may feel essentially normal.
BTL Australia notes that some patients report improvement after the first treatment, although the standard treatment program involves multiple sessions and results commonly develop across the treatment course. [1]
You should not judge the effectiveness of the entire program solely by how different you feel immediately after session one.
When can I expect results if there is no recovery period?
The absence of downtime does not mean that the final treatment effect occurs instantly.
EMSELLA stimulates muscle.
Muscular adaptation and changes in pelvic floor function develop over time.
Published studies have reported improvements after completion of a six-session course, with some studies showing continued improvement at later follow-up. [3,4]
For urinary symptoms, useful changes may include:
fewer leakage episodes
reduced pad use
less leakage when coughing or exercising
better urinary control
improved confidence in everyday activities
How many treatments are usually recommended?
At ¹EM, the standard initial EMSELLA program is:
6 sessions
Usually 2 sessions per week
Approximately 3 weeks
Each treatment takes around 30 minutes.
Because there is generally no required downtime, this schedule can often be incorporated into normal work and daily routines without needing three weeks of lifestyle disruption.

Should I avoid anything before or after treatment?
For routine EMSELLA treatment, there is generally minimal preparation or post-treatment restriction.
The more important consideration is ensuring that you have been properly assessed for treatment suitability.
Before treatment, tell the ¹EM team about:
pacemakers
implanted defibrillators
electronic implants
metal implants
previous pelvic surgery
pregnancy
recent childbirth
recent prostate surgery
significant medical changes
These issues are more important to safety than a complicated list of lifestyle restrictions after treatment.
Is EMSELLA safer because there is no downtime?
No downtime is certainly a practical advantage, but recovery time and treatment safety are not the same thing.
EMSELLA® has important contraindications despite being non-invasive.
For example, treatment is not appropriate for people with certain active electronic implants such as pacemakers.
Some metallic implants may also make treatment inappropriate.
At ¹EM, treatment suitability is established before the program begins.

What if something feels unusual after treatment?
Most patients can continue their normal routine immediately.
However, contact the ¹EM team if you experience something unexpected or concerning.
Do not assume that every new symptom must simply be a normal consequence of treatment.
If appropriate, the team can arrange clinical review with Dr Emir.
Why is having no downtime important?
For many patients, pelvic floor symptoms already interfere with daily life.
Treatment should ideally not create another significant disruption.
Someone seeking help for bladder leakage may already be:
working full time
caring for children
exercising regularly
travelling
recovering confidence after childbirth
returning to normal activities after prostate treatment
EMSELLA offers a way to work on pelvic floor strength without routinely requiring time away from those responsibilities.
That convenience is one of its strongest practical benefits.
Frequently asked questions
Is there downtime after EMSELLA?
Generally, no. Most patients can resume their normal daily activities immediately after treatment.
Can I go back to work afterwards?
Yes. Most patients can return directly to work.
Can I drive afterwards?
Yes. EMSELLA® does not normally involve sedation or anaesthetic.
Can I exercise after EMSELLA?
Generally, yes, if you feel comfortable.
Can I go to the gym after EMSELLA?
Usually, yes.
Can I run after EMSELLA?
There is generally no treatment-related restriction on running after a routine session if you feel comfortable.
Can I shower afterwards?
Yes.
Can I have sex afterwards?
There is generally no EMSELLA-specific recovery period requiring abstinence after routine treatment. Any restrictions from childbirth, surgery or another medical condition still apply.

Many people experience little or no discomfort. Temporary muscular awareness, soreness or fatigue can occur because the pelvic floor has been repeatedly stimulated.
Do I need someone to drive me home?
Usually not.
How long does each treatment take?
Approximately 28 to 30 minutes.
Can I book treatment during a working day?
Yes. The combination of short appointments and generally no required downtime makes EMSELLA relatively easy to incorporate into a normal schedule.
Pelvic floor treatment without putting your life on hold
One of the biggest advantages of EMSELLA is practical.
You can arrive at ¹EM, remain fully clothed for your treatment and usually return directly to the rest of your day.
No surgery.
No anaesthetic.
No internal treatment.
No routine recovery period.
For people who want to improve pelvic floor function without adding significant disruption to an already busy life, that can make starting treatment considerably easier.
